Friday, May 24
Astoria - Columbia River Bar Pilots signed a five-year deal with Helicopter Air Transport of Portland to take them out to ships preparing to enter the river. About 4,000 large ships a year enter the river near Astoria heading for the Port of Portland and several Washington ports, officials said. Pilots must get ships over a treacherous bar.
